A new species of Polyonyx Stimpson, 1858, of the P. sinensis group (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura: Porcellanidae) commensal with a chaetopterid worm from Peninsular Malaysia Naturalis
Ng, P.K.L.; Sasekumar, A..
A new species of porcellanid crab, Polyonyx vermicola, belonging to the P. sinensis group is described from Selangor, Peninsular Malaysia. The species is an obligate commensal of tubes of the chaetopterid worm Sasekumaria selangora Rullier, 1976 (Polychaeta). Polyonyx vermicola is differentiated from all congeners by its small size, possessing a more rectangular carapace, proportionately longer carpus on the larger cheliped, strongly gaping cheliped fingers, the tips of which are turned outwards, the outer surface of each cheliped fingers lined with a row of small granules, and having the ventral margin of the third ambulatory propodus armed with strong spinules.

Carcinization in the Anomura – fact or fiction? II. Evidence from larval, megalopal and early juvenile morphology Naturalis
McLaughlin, Patsy A.; Lemaitre, Rafael; Tudge, Christopher C..
In this second of a two-part series, carcinization in the Anomura has been reviewed from early juvenile, megalopal, and larval perspectives. Data from megalopal and early juvenile development in ten genera of the Lithodidae have provided unequivocal evidence that earlier hypotheses regarding evolution of the king crab pleon were erroneous. A pattern of sundering, and decalcification has been traced from the megalopal stage through several early crabs stages in species of Lithodes and Paralomis, with supplemental evidence from species in eight other genera. Of major significance has been the attention directed to the marginal plates of the second pleomere, which when separated in lithodids are not homologous with the adult so-called “marginal plates” of the...

Composition and abundance of porcellanid crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura) from rocky bottoms off Vitória Island, southeast coast of Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Alves,Douglas F. R.; Barros-Alves,Samara de P.; Cobo,Valter J..
This study aimed to describe the species composition and abundance of the porcellanid crabs inhabiting the consolidated sublittoral off an island on the southeastern coast of Brazil. During a sampling program at Vitória Island (23º44'S, 45º01'W), collections were carried out monthly from February 2004 through January 2006. The crabs were hand-caught by SCUBA divers during the daytime. The greatest carapace width (CW) was measured, and the sex and developmental stage were identified for each crab. The specimens were grouped into five demographic categories: juvenile males, adult males, juvenile females, adult females, and ovigerous females. A total of 275 crabs belonging to three genera and six species were obtained. Petrolisthes amoenus (Guérin-Méneville,...

Description of a new species of Petrolisthes in the Indo-West Pacific with a redefinition of P. hastatus Stimpson, 1858 and resurrection of P. inermis (Heller, 1862) (Crustacea, Anomura, Porcellanidae) ArchiMer
Werding, Bernd; Hiller, Alexandra.
The porcellanid crab Petrolisthes hastatus Stimpson, 1858, has been traditionally viewed as a highly variable species with a wide distribution in the West Pacific. For more than a century there has been taxonomic confusion of this species with morphologically similar taxa, some of which were synonymized with Stimpson's taxon. We redefine P. hastatus, resurrect P. inermis as a valid species, discuss the status of P. tenkatei De Man, 1893, and describe a new species as P. elegantissimus from Indonesia.

Die Gattung Neopisosoma Haig, 1960 im tropischen Westatlantik, mit der Beschreibung von Neopisosoma neglectum spec. nov. und Neopisosoma orientale spec. nov. (Crustacea: Anomura: Porcellanidae) Naturalis
Werding, B..
Neopisosoma angustifrons (Benedict, 1901) and N. curacaoense (Schmitt, 1924) are described; for both species an extension of range is reported. N. neglectum spec. nov. from Colombia and the Lesser Antilles and N. orientale spec. nov. from Trinidad are described. The status of Neopisosoma as a distinct genus probably will have to be reconsidered.

Extension of the geographical distribution of some brachyuran and porcellanid decapods (Crustacea) to the coast of the State of São Paulo, Brazil Zoologia
Alves,Douglas F. R.; Cobo,Valter J.; Melo,Gustavo A. S. de.
Investigations of the distribution of marine organisms provide a better understanding of the patterns of distribution and dispersal of these animals. Extensions of the distributional limits of decapod crustaceans in Brazilian waters have been recorded steadily and gradually, but these limits still remain poorly understood. The present study provides information extending the known range of eight species of brachyuran crabs and one species of porcellanid crab. The animals were obtained by Scuba diving during a sampling program carried out near Vitória Island, Ilhabela, on the northeastern coast of the State of São Paulo (23º44'04"S-45º01'35"W) between February, 2004 and January, 2005. These new records extend the geographical distributions of the...

Population structure and breeding period of Pachycheles monilifer (Dana) (Anomura, Porcellanidae) inhabiting sabellariid sand reefs from the littoral coast of São Paulo State, Brazil Zoologia
Fransozo,Adilson; Bertini,Giovana.
The purpose of the present study is to examine the population structure and the breeding period of Pachycheles monilifer (Dana, 1852) inhabiting sabellariid worm reefs in the littoral of São Paulo State coast. The specimens were obtained at 2-month intervals from September/94 to July/95. The study sites were located at the rocky shores of Tenorio and Paranapuã Beaches. Individuals sampled showed a total averaged 4.4 ± 1.4 mm carapace length. Ovigerous females were more frequent in September. Despite clear differences regarding the arrangement of these sabellariid colonies, they are extremely important to the establishment and maintenance of P. monilifer.
